Moments Test

The centre of gravity of a lamina is the point at which the entire weight of the lamina can be considered to act, and it is determined by the distribution of mass within the lamina.

  • Definition of Moment of a Force: The moment of a force about a point is defined as the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force.

  • Principle of Moments (at Equilibrium): For a system to be in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments about any point must equal the sum of the counterclockwise moments about that same point.

  • Machines: Machines utilize the principle of moments to gain mechanical advantage, allowing smaller forces to move larger loads by altering the distance over which the force is applied.
