State crimes → simple assault, disorderly conduct, drunk driving, shoplifting

Federal crimes → not paying taxes mail fraud, espionage (spying on the government), international smuggling, treason (betraying your country)

State and federal crimes → illegal possession of dangerous drugs bank robbery

Felony → potential prison time is more than a year

Examples → murder, manslaughter, burg;ary

Misdemeanor → potential prison time is less than one year

Examples → Driving without a license, underage drinking, leaving the scene of an automobile accident
