FA Davis Orientation
Course Overview & Structure
Course Classification & Delivery Format:
NUR 119 is a 1-credit hybrid course taken concurrently with NUR 118.
The course consists primarily of online independent work combined with minimal required in-person sessions (such as orientation, library resource introductions, and writing workshops).
If a student fails NUR 118 but successfully passes NUR 119, they do not need to repeat NUR 119 when re-taking NUR 118.
Course Leadership & Instruction:
The Course Coordinator oversees grading across all online modules, quizzes, and exams, with the exception of the Written Assignment Competency.
Clinical and adjunct instructors associated with the course include Ashley McSweeney and Sadie Mishu.
Primary Online Platforms:
Brightspace: Used for course administrative documents, focus sheets, weekly attendance tracking, resiliency assignments, and open-resource exams/quizzes.
FA Davis: Houses core online learning modules tied to published textbooks (Medical Language Lab, DosageCalc 360, and Davis Advantage).
ATI: Holds independent nursing learning modules (account setup required for cohort access).

Written Assignment Competency Guidelines:
Nursing writing is scientific, evidence-based, concise, research-driven, and structured—distinct from creative writing.
Evaluated directly by the student's academic advisor.
Competency Standard: Must achieve a score of or higher by the 3rd attempt.
Gradebook Recording: The grade earned on the first submitted attempt (e.g., ) is permanently recorded into the gradebook for the course grade allocation. However, the student must repeat the assignment until reaching at least to satisfy the competency requirement.
Attendance Tracking & Late Work Policy:
Attendance is recorded weekly via Quickly in Brightspace based on assignment completion. Submitting no work for a given week results in an absence mark.
Focus Sheets open on Mondays at 08:00 (or post-class Wednesday) and close on Sundays at 23:59.
Assignments are timestamped. Receptions of late submissions are at instructor discretion and heavily depend on student accountability, proactive electronic communication, and provided medical documentation.
Dosage Calculation & Math Standard:
Dosage calculation math is integrated into every unit exam and final exam in NUR 118 and NUR 119.
Precision is mandatory to prevent clinical harm (e.g., confusing with represents a 1000-fold medication error).
Required Materials, Software, & Platforms
Required Textbooks & Digital Editions:
Medical Terminology Express (3rd Edition) by Gillis.
