the virgin mary + jesus
- the annunciation: the visit of the angel gabriel to the virgin mary to tell her she is to be the mother of jesus, after mary’s yes, she became the mother of jesus through the power of the holy spirit
- the immaculate conception: from the moment of conception mary was saved from original sin
- virginity of mary: mary gave birth to jesus despite the fact that she did not have sexual relations with a man

jesus hidden life - first 30 years
- lived life of a manual labor-carpenter
- obedient to his earthly parents (4th commandment)
- continued to grow in his understanding of the faith
why the incarnation?
- why did jesus become man?
- to save us from sin + reconcile with the father
- to reveal the father’s love
- to model a life of holiness
- to make us sons + daughters of god
the two natures of jesus - true god, true man
- divine nature → god the father, human-nature - mary
| the union of the human and divine person is called the hypostatic union | mary is the mother of god because jesus is one person | jesus has both human and divine will and intellect - divine governs man | christ has free will - he must! |

- jesus has a rational, human soul
- jesus had to gain human knowledge

the wills of jesus
- jesus has two wills - the human will + the divine will
- not opposed
- jesus in his human will is submitted to the divine will
jesus’ human + true body
- jesus’ body was finite
- jesus’ body leads us to an understanding of the invisible mature of the soul and of god
- jesus’ humanity was at the forefront, especially during his childhood
jesus’ human flesh
- due to jesus being fully god many believed that jesus having a physical body would not be logical
- those heresies would eliminate the reality that jesus suffered and died for our redemption
- denying jesus’ body also denies the eucharist
human emotions
- jesus truly was man - he experienced suffering and death
- jesus wept (john 11:35)
- jesus felt anger (mark 3:5) (matthew 21:12)
- jesus felt loneliness (matthew 27:46)
the heart of jesus
- jesus loved each one of us which led him to his death on the cross
- loved with a human heart - a heart that broke, was sad, experienced loss, etc
- sacred heart = symbol of god’s love
redeemed through his humanity
- christ willingly accepted his mission to redeem us
adoration of the magi
- gold = kingship
- frankincense = divinity (adoration)
- myrrh = sacrifice/death
