Imagery (mental practice/stimulation) is an experience that recreates real performance in the mind.
The Purpose of Imagery
Visual images - Seeing the movement unfold
Kinesthetic sensations - Feeling the movement
Auditory cues - Hearing performance sounds
Tactile and Olfactory - Touch is a small sensation
Imagery recreates emotions (anxiety, excitement, confidence) and thoughts (focus, self-belief). Imagery serves two broad functions: cognitive and motivational.
Paivio’s Functions of Imagery
It categorises imagery into four distinct types based on function and level of application:
Cognitive-Specific: rehearsing individual skills, e.g., imagining executing a perfect tennis serve
Cognitive-General: rehearsing strategies and game plans, e.g., visualising the team formations and tactical movements
Motivational-Specific: goal-oriented responses, e.g., imagining winning a championship
Motivational-General: arousal and emotion regulation, e.g., using calming imagery to reduce anxiety before competition

Implication: Imagery activates the performance system in the brain, making it functionally similar to physical practice
The brain responds to vivid imagery as if the skill were actually being performed responds
PETTLEP Model of Imagery
Provides a framework for designing effective imagery interventions.
Physical - imagery should resemble the actual performance conditions
Environment - should resemble as closely as possible the actual performance environment.
Task - match the specific demands to the actual performance.
Timing - prepare for and execute movements in real time.
Learning - adapt imagery content as skills develop
Emotion - experience realistic emotions during imagery.
Perspective - choose an internal or external viewpoint. An internal perspective may be more effective for kinaesthetic sensations
How can Imagery reduce the risk of overtraining
Arousal regulation - manage physiological stress responses

Imagery can allow athletes to maintain psychological and technical readiness whilst reducing physical training volume. This can prevent the accumulation of fatigue, support function training behaviours and maintain motivation during recovery.
