Group Process in the Philippines
in the Philippines group context is influence by “hiya” and “kapwa” .
At least eight modes and levels of social interactions representing different degrees of Interpersonal relations have been established by Santiago and Enriquez:
pakikitungo (transaction/civility-with)
pakikisalamuha (Interaction with)
pakikilahok (joining, participating with)
pakikibagay (On conformity with/ in accord with)
pakikisama (getting along with)
pakikipagpalagayang loob (being .in: rapport understanding/acceptance with)
pakikisangkot (getting involved)
pakikiisa (being with)
Stages in the life of a group
Tuckman’s linear model
Forming: Members come together, learn about each other, and determine the purpose of the group
Storming: Members engage in more direct communication and get to know each other. Conflicts will arise during this stage.
Norming: Members establish rules about how they communicate and work. Status, rank and roles are established.
Performing: Members fulfill their purpose and reach their goals
Adjourning: Members leave the group
Functions of communication in a group
Control: Sending of feedback, either formal or informal communication, across hierarchies also affect group member behaviors.
Motivation: Communication fosters motivation by clarifying to members what they must do, rewards for desired behavior can also stimulate behavior.
Emotional expression: Communication among members is a mechanism to express satisfaction and frustration
Information: communication in a group provides information necessary for decision making.
Team Building
A team is a group of two or more people working interdependently to meet a specific goal or purpose. A team can be for a long time, for a few hours, depending on the goal that they need to achieve.
Team building is the process of turning a group of individual contributing employees into a group of people organized to work together to meet the needs of their customers by accomplishing their purpose and goals.
