Topic: Establishing, extending and enshrining LGBTQ+ Rights
The General Assembly,
Reaffirming the principles of universality, indivisibility, interdependence and interrelatedness of all human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
Recalling the Yogyakarta Principles on the Application of International Human Rights Law in relation to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity,
Deeply concerned by acts of violence and discrimination committed against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity in various parts of the world,
Recognising the progress made in some countries towards ensuring full equality and dignity for
LGBTQ+ individuals, including the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 36 nations,
Alarmed by the continued criminalisation of consensual same-sex relations in 60 countries, with some imposing the death penalty,
Acknowledging the work of the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity,
Hereby:
Urges all Member States to decriminalise consensual same-sex relations and repeal laws that discriminate against individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity:
Calls upon Member States to enact comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics;
Condemns in the strongest terms the use of the death penalty, torture, and other forms of violence against individuals based on their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity:
Requests all Member States to recognise and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, including the right to marry, adopt children, and access healthcare without discrimination;
Encourages Member States to implement educational programs to promote understanding, tolerance, and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals;
Supports the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and calls for full cooperation with this mechanism;
