The Nature, Types, and Sources of Stress
Stress is an integral part of life that arises when individuals face challenges, problems, or difficult circumstances. While often viewed negatively, stress acts much like electricity: it provides energy, increases human arousal, and affects performance. However, just as an excessive electric current can fuse a bulb or damage an appliance, high levels of stress can cause performance to deteriorate and produce unpleasant effects. Conversely, too little stress may result in listlessness, low motivation, and slow, inefficient performance.
Eustress: This term describes the level of stress that is beneficial for an individual. It serves as one of a person’s best assets for achieving peak performance and managing minor crises.
Distress: This is the negative manifestation of stress that causes the body’s wear and tear and occurs when stress exceeds a person’s ability to cope.
Etymology: The word stress originates from the Latin words strictus (meaning tight or narrow) and stringere (meaning to tighten). These roots reflect the internal feelings of muscular tightness and breathing constriction reported by individuals under pressure.
Definition: Stress is the pattern of responses an organism makes to stimulus events that disturb equilibrium and exceed the ability to cope. Hans Selye, the father of modern stress research, defined it as ‘the non-specific response of the body to any demand.’ This means regardless of the cause, the body responds with the same physiological pattern.
Strain: This is the specific reaction to external stressors.
Stressors: These are events that cause the body to give a stress response, such as noise, crowding, bad relationships, or daily commuting.
The Cognitive Theory of Stress and Appraisal
According to Lazarus and his colleagues, stress is a dynamic mental/cognitive state. It is not something that resides solely in the individual or the environment but is embedded in the process of individuals transacting with their social and cultural environments. The experience of stress is dependent on an individual’s cognitive appraisal of events and the resources available to deal with them.
Primary Appraisal
Primary appraisal refers to the perception of a new or changing environment as positive, neutral, or negative. Negative events are further appraised for:
Harm: Assessment of damage already done by an event.
Threat: Assessment of possible future damage that may occur.
Challenge: Associated with confident expectations of being able to overcome and potentially profit from the event.
Secondary Appraisal
Secondary appraisal is the assessment of one’s coping abilities and resources. It determines if physical, mental, personal, or social resources are sufficient to meet the harm, threat, or challenge. Factors influencing this include:
Past Experience: Successful past handling of similar situations reduces current threat perception.
Controllability: Believing one has mastery over the onset or consequences of a negative situation reduces stress levels.
Self-Efficacy: Confidence in one’s own abilities determines if a situation is viewed as an intimidating threat or a surmountable challenge.
Physiological and Psychological Reactions to Stress
Stressors can be external (environmental/social) or internal (psychological). When these events challenge or threaten well-being, they trigger a variety of reactions.
Physiological Level
The hypothalamus initiates action along two distinct pathways:
Autonomic Nervous System Pathway: The adrenal gland releases large amounts of catecholamines, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine, into the bloodstream. This triggers the fight-or-flight response.
Pituitary Gland Pathway: The gland secretes corticosteroid (cortisol), which provides the body with energy.
Four Major Effects of Stress
Emotional Effects: Stressed individuals may experience mood swings, erratic behavior, anxiety, depression, increased physical/psychological tension, and loss of confidence.
Physiological Effects: Increased production of adrenaline and cortisol leads to changes in heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, the expansion of air passages in the lungs, slowing of the digestive system, and constriction of blood vessels.
Cognitive Effects: Mental overload can occur, leading to poor concentration, reduced short-term memory capacity, and the inability to make sound decisions.
Behavioural Effects: Changes include disrupted sleep patterns, increased absenteeism, reduced work performance, and increased intake of stimulants or substances like caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, or addictive tranquillisers.

Major Types of Stress
Physical and Environmental Stress: Physical stress involves demands that change the body's state (overexertion, lack of sleep, injury, poor diet). Environmental stress includes unavoidable surroundings (pollution, crowding, noise, extreme temperatures) and catastrophic disasters (fire, earthquakes, floods).
Psychological Stress: Internal sources generated within the mind, such as:
Frustration: Results from the blocking of needs and motives (e.g., social discrimination, low grades).
Conflicts: Occur between incompatible needs or motives (e.g., choosing between two career paths or values).
Internal Pressures: Stem from high personal expectations (e.g., ‘I must be perfect’).
Social Pressures: Demands from other people or interpersonal ‘personality clashes’.
Social Stress: Induced externally through interactions with others, such as the death of a family member, strained relationships, or trouble with neighbors.
Primary Sources of Stress
Life Events: Major changes like moving house or the break-up of a relationship that disturb routine and cause upheaval.
Hassles: Frequent everyday personal stresses such as commuting, noisy surroundings, or water shortages. These can have a serious cumulative impact on psychological well-being.
Traumatic Events: Extreme events (accidents, robberies, tsunamis) that may result in anxiety symptoms, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts long after the event.
Measuring Stressful Life Events
Holmes and Rahe developed a measure of life events, which was adapted for India as the Presumptive Stressful Life Events Scale by Singh, Kaur, and Kaur. It is a self-rating questionnaire of life changes assigned numerical values based on severity.

Stress is estimated to play a role in to of all physical illnesses, and of medical visits are for stress-related symptoms.
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Proposed by Hans Selye based on studies of animals and humans, GAS describes the body’s response to prolonged stress in three stages:
Alarm Reaction Stage: A stressor activates the adrenal-pituitary-cortex system, releasing hormones and preparing the individual for fight or flight.
Resistance Stage: If stress continues, the parasympathetic nervous system attempts to use resources cautiously while the organism tries to cope with the threat.
Exhaustion Stage: Continued exposure drains body resources. Systems become ineffective, and the individual becomes susceptible to ‘diseases of adaptation,’ such as high blood pressure.
Psychoneuroimmunology
This field studies the links between the mind, brain, and immune system. Stress impairs the immune system, which uses leucocytes (white blood cells) to protect the body:
cells: Destroy invaders. -helper cells increase activity; these are attacked by HIV, which causes AIDS.
cells: Produce antibodies.
Natural Killer cells: Fight viruses and tumors. Stress reduces their cytotoxicity, increasing vulnerability to infections and cancer.
Coping with Stress
Coping is a dynamic, situation-specific reaction intended to resolve problems and reduce stress.
Strategies by Endler and Parker
Task-oriented Strategy: Obtaining information, deciding priorities, and acting directly to deal with the situation.
Emotion-oriented Strategy: Efforts to maintain hope or control emotions, including venting feelings of frustration.
Avoidance-oriented Strategy: Denying the seriousness of the situation or replacing stressful thoughts with activities like watching TV or calling a friend.
Strategies by Lazarus and Folkman
Problem-focused: Attacking the problem itself to gain information or alter the event/belief to reduce threat value.
Emotion-focused: Efforts to limit emotional disruption with minimal effort to change the actual event (e.g., ‘letting it out of the system’).
Stress Management Techniques
Relaxation Techniques: Active skills involving deep breathing and muscle relaxation, starting from the lower body up to the face.
Meditation: Yogic methods for refocusing attention to achieve altered states of consciousness.
Biofeedback: Monitoring physiological activity (three stages: developing awareness, learning control in quiet settings, transferring control to daily life).
Creative Visualisation: Using imagery and imagination while in a relaxed state to turn imagined positive scenes into reality.
Cognitive Behavioural Techniques (CBT): Developed by Meichenbaum to replace irrational thoughts with rational ones through assessment, stress reduction, and application phases (Stress Inoculation Training).
Exercise: Regular practice (typically times per week for per session) improves heart/lung efficiency and lowers blood pressure.

Positive health is a state of complete physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. Factors that buffer stress include:
1. Stress Resistant Personality (Hardiness)
Kobasa identified the ‘Three Cs’ of stress-resistant people:
Commitment: To work, family, and hobbies.
Control: A sense of purpose and direction.
Challenge: Seeing changes as normal and positive rather than threatening.
2. Resilience
Resilience is the capacity to ‘bounce back’ from adversity. It is defined by three resources:
I HAVE: External social and interpersonal strengths.
I AM: Inner strengths (self-respect).
I CAN: Interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
3. Life Skills
Assertiveness: Communicating needs and thoughts clearly and confidently; ability to say ‘no.’
Time Management: Organizing life around values and goals.
Rational Thinking: Challenging distorted beliefs and anxiety-provoking thoughts.
Social Support: Existence of a reliable social network. Types include:
Tangible Support: Material aid (money, goods).
Informational Support: Procedures and resource identification provided by others.
Emotional Support: Reassurance of being loved and valued.
Self-care: Maintaining physical health and practicing relaxed, diaphragmatic breathing.
Examination Anxiety (Special Case)
Examination stress is characterized as ‘evaluative apprehension’ or ‘evaluative stress.’ High-test-anxious students perceive examinations as personally threatening and experience emotional arousal and negative self-centered cognitions. This leads to attentional blocks and impairment of performance. Management strategies include revision timetables, condensing notes, spacing revision, and focusing on staying calm on the exam day.
