ART NOTES SCULPTURE UNIT
Assemblage — art that is made by assembling disparate elements, often everyday objects, scavenged by the artist or bought specifically.
Found objects — describes an object found by an artist, which is presented as a work of art with minimal modification.
Maquette — a model for a larger piece of sculpture created to visualize how it might look, what materials are needed, etc.
Installation — describes large-scale, mixed media constructions designed for a specific place; sometimes temporary.
Additive — a method of construction in which the surface is built up by adding more of a certain material
Subtractive — a technique for removing mass. Example: carving
In-the-round — a type of sculpture that can be seen from all angles; a freestanding or suspended structure
Craftsmanship — the skill and neatness used to create an artwork
Non-objective art — does not look like anything real or man-made
Relief sculpture — sculpture that has a raised surfaced, characterized by having a background and limited views. 3 kinds of relief sculpture:
bass (low), mezzo (medium), and alto (high)
Minimalism — art that is reduced to a bare minimum, simplistic, popular during the 1960s and 70s
Mobile — moving sculpture that balances, usually hanging,
