EUROPE

  • U.S. is one of only 5 countries out of 173 that DO NOT guarantee some form of maternity leave.

    • Fathers are granted paid leave in 65 countries.

    • In Sweden, mothers get 1.3 years off and receive about ⅔ of their usual wages during the leave.

    • In Norway, mothers get up to a year off at 80% of their usual wages.

  • Childcare in the U.S. costs about $12,000 per year for a family with two children, $500 a month per child.

  • The WHO rates various European nation’s health care systems as top-ranked in the world, but the American system is ranked only 37.

  • U.S. ranks 25 among 29 nations in the proportion of college students who complete university degrees or certificate programs, falling behind most European nations.

IDEOLOGY (THE GREAT DIVIDE)

  • Blue Ideology - value community/cooperation/collaboration/connectivity. They are environmentalists and want to take care of the earth. They believe in science as the way to gain knowledge about and understand the natural/social/psychological world.

    • “We need to take care of each other”

  • Red Ideology - individualism/self-reliance/self-interest/competition/wealth maximization/science deniers.

    • “You take care of yourself; I’ll take care of myself”

  • Medicare - A national social insurance program administered by the Social Security Administration. It was created in 1965. It pays for the health care of citizens 65 years and older.

    • Blue - fighting to keep it in place.

    • Red - trying to get rid of it.

  • Medicaid - The U.S. health program for certain people and families with low incomes and resources. Jointly funded by the state and federal governments and is managed by the states.

INDUSTRIALIZATION OF FOOD

  • Green plants are one of nature’s best sources of a class of fatty acids called Omega 3s. They are VITAL to our health.

  • Many of the foods we eat are very rich in a rival group of fatty acids called Omega 6s. 

  • Today's Corn contributes 553 calories a day to America’s per capita food supply and Soy another 257.

  • Today these four crops (corn,soy,wheat,rice) account for ⅔ of the calories we eat.

  • Americans spend 90% of their food budgets on processed foods.

  • One of the most momentous changes in the American diet since 1909 has been the increase in the % of calories coming from Sugars from 13% to 20%.

SOCIAL HISTORY

  • There is a low tolerance by a group’s mature males for one of their numbers dominating, bossing or denigrating the others.

  • About 10,000 years ago, humans began learning how to domesticate plants and animals.

  • Gemeinschaft - intimate community 

  • The Great Transformation: the way people live together in societies.

  • Industrialism - a change in the way people in societies make the things they need.

  • A barrel of oil contains the energy-equivalent of almost 25,000 hours of human labor.

HEALTH CARE

  • When it comes to the essential task of providing health care for people, the mighty USA is a fourth-rate power.

  • Coverage - our system doesn’t cover everybody.

  • New study finds 45,000 deaths annually linked to lack of health coverage.

    • U.S. ranks last when it comes to providing universal access to medical care.

    • The # of Americans who do not have insurance is around 30-50 million.
