SDGs (2)
Topic 8: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Overview
Officially introduced on 1 January 2016 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Adopted by world leaders from 193 countries during the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.
Aims to eliminate poverty, address climate change, and promote sustainable development based on the premise that all countries must work together to achieve these goals.
Significance and Background
Building on Previous Goals:
Follows the predecessors, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), focusing on poverty reduction but did not address systemic barriers to development.
The SDGs consider root causes like inequality and environmental degradation as vital areas to target.
Universal Application:
Unlike the MDGs, which targeted only developing countries, the SDGs apply to all nations—rich, middle, and low-income—as each country leads its efforts.
Elements of the SDGs
Critical Areas:
Key focus areas include:
People
Planet
Prosperity
Peace
Partnership
Interconnectedness:
Goals are interconnected, and progress in one area can positively or negatively affect others.
