SDGs (2)

Topic 8: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Overview

  • Officially introduced on 1 January 2016 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

  • Adopted by world leaders from 193 countries during the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.

  • Aims to eliminate poverty, address climate change, and promote sustainable development based on the premise that all countries must work together to achieve these goals.

Significance and Background

  • Building on Previous Goals:

    • Follows the predecessors, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), focusing on poverty reduction but did not address systemic barriers to development.

    • The SDGs consider root causes like inequality and environmental degradation as vital areas to target.

  • Universal Application:

    • Unlike the MDGs, which targeted only developing countries, the SDGs apply to all nations—rich, middle, and low-income—as each country leads its efforts.

Elements of the SDGs

  • Critical Areas:

    • Key focus areas include:

      • People

      • Planet

      • Prosperity

      • Peace

      • Partnership

  • Interconnectedness:

    • Goals are interconnected, and progress in one area can positively or negatively affect others.
