Trophic Level of Humans
Humans are classified as consumers, also known as heterotrophs.
Heterotrophic existence relies entirely on eating other organisms for survival and energy.
Humans are omnivores by nature.
An extreme dietary example includes individuals practicing strict fruitarianism (extreme vegans) who consume exclusively fruits, which can result in severe physical depletion where the body resembles nothing but a skeleton.
Cellular Boundaries and Wall Composition
Human cells do not possess a cell wall; they are enclosed exclusively by a cell membrane.
Organisms that possess cell walls include bacteria, plants, and fungi.
While the structural components of cell walls differ among bacteria, plants, and fungi, all of these groups share the presence of a rigid cell wall.
Humans are complex creatures organized hierarchically from individual cells up to whole organismal systems.

Element / Atom: The fundamental basic unit of matter.
Molecule: Structure formed when multiple atoms bind to one another.
Macromolecule: Large molecules formed from smaller molecular units that serve as structural components of organelles inside cells.
Organelle: Functional subcellular structures composed of macromolecules.
Cell: The fundamental biological unit of life formed by a collection of organelles.
Example: Nerve cells (neurons). The human brain contains approximately nerve cells.
Tissue Level
Tissue Definition: A group or collection of identical cells that perform a specific, common function.
Four Primary Types of Tissues:
Connective tissue

Nervous tissue
Epithelial tissue
Nervous Tissue Function: Responsible for transmitting and sending chemical and electrical signals throughout the body.

Organ Level
Organ Definition: A structural unit composed of a collection of several different tissues working together to perform a common function.
Examples of Nervous System Organs:

Nerves (individual nerve structures function as individual organs within the system)
Organ System Level
Organ System Definition: A higher-level functional grouping of multiple organs working in tandem.
Examples of Organ Systems:
Nervous system

Organismal Level and Emergent Properties
Organism Definition: A living entity formed by the collection, interaction, and interconnectedness of all organ systems.
Emergent Properties: New properties that arise at higher levels of organization that are not present at lower levels.
Example of Emergent Property (Fish Movement):
Movement (swimming) requires the integration of multiple organ systems.
The nervous system sends a signal to muscular tissue.
Muscular tissue contracts while attached to the skeletal system.
The coordinated interaction of the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems produces the emergent property of movement (swimming).
Population, Community, and Ecosystem Levels
Population Level
Population Definition: A group of individual organisms belonging to the exact same particular species occupying a specific geographical area.
Examples of Populations:
A population of snapper fish
A population of mangrove trees
A population of birds
A population of bacteria
Community Level
Community Definition: The collection of all living organisms (biotic components) residing across all populations in a shared habitat or ecosystem.
Ecosystem Level
Ecosystem Definition: The integrated system formed by the interaction between living organisms (biotic components) and non-living environmental elements (abiotic components).
Abiotic Components: Water, precipitation, rocks, and soil.
Geographic Example: Regional ecosystems mapped across geographical areas, such as the state of Florida.
Emergent Property of Ecosystems: The continuous cycling of matter between living organisms and non-living components.

The collection of all ecosystems across planet Earth.
