"The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe

Summery of the Stanzas

Stanza 1:

  • Its about midnight on a dreary night. The speaker is nearly napping when he heard a tapping.

Stanza 2:

  • It was a cold December night. The speaker was grieving the lose of his love Lenore

Stanza 3:

  • The speaker believes there is someone seeking entrance into his house and he is frightened

Stanza 4:

  • The speaker opens the door and only to find no one there

Stanza 5:

  • The speaker looks into the hallway only to not see anything, he calls the name of his dead wife Lenore and it is repeated by something.

Stanza 6:

  • He goes back in the room and hears tapping thinking its wind.

Stanza 7:

  • He lets in a bird which sits on a bust

Stanza 8:

  • He starts to think that the raven is a messenger from the under world.

Stanza 9:

  • The raven is on top of the chamber door and is shocked how clear the raven speaks

Stanza 10:

  • The raven is only saying one word and makes the narrator sad and uneasy

Stanza 11:

  • The speaker is staring at the bird and it is questioning it

Stanza 12:

  • The speaker is annoyed how the bird says nothing but nevermore

Stanza 13:

  • The speaker is sitting in a chair staring at the raven

Stanza 14:

  • The Raven is reminding the narrator about Lenore. An Angle Spreads Perfume.

Stanza 15:

  • Yelling at the bird and telling it is evil

Stanza 16:

  • The speaker is telling the Raven that it is the opiate; the bird is the devil and Lenore is the angel

Stanza 17:

  • The speaker is yelling at the raven and he just says nevermore

Stanza 18:

  • The speaker is talking about how he is tired and alone. The raven won’t leave and reminds him of grief.
