Features of a Catholic Church
Altar
The liturgy of the Eucharist takes place at the Altar. The priest consecrates the hosts- blesses the bread and wine and it is transformed into the body and blood of Christ.
The altar reminds Catholics of Jesus’ sacrifice and death on the Cross because of this Jesus offers us salvation and redemption from sin. Jesus said:
‘Whoever eats of my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life’
The altar is also a table which reminds Christians of sharing in a meal the same way Jesus did at the last supper.
Baptismal Font
The baptismal font is used for baptism where a person becomes a Christian. Jesus’ final command was to “Go and make disciples of all nations and baptise them in the name of the father son and holy spirit.” The font is linked to the idea of salvation, its a sign of cleansing from original sin. Baptism removes the sins that get in the way of our relationship with God. Baptism represents a death to sin and a new life in the family of God.
Crucifix
A crucifix is a cross with the image of a crucified Christ on. It reminds Christians of the suffering and death of Jesus. It reminds Catholics that he paid the price for our salvation. Jesus’ death enables us to have eternal life with God in heaven.
