UNIT CONCEPTS

  • Christianity exists around the life and teaching of Jesus Christ and around the belief in a Trinitarian God

    • The Father

    • The Son

    • The Holy Spirit

  • Jesus is God in human form

  • Influences worship more than the other two

  • Believe in Adam and Eve to be actual persons who lived in paradise, sinned for the first time and lost paradise

    • Metaphor for the essentially sinful nature of humanity

    • Original sin, tainted humanity

  • Baptism and Eucharist

    • Holy communion, the mass, the Divine Liturgy, Holy Qurbana, the Lord’s Supper

    • All are rituals to resolve of sin

    • Worship encompasses birth, transition to adulthood, marriage and death

    • Concert of time: the week, the seasons and geographical locations

    • Re-integrate humanity

  • Highly individualistic, focuses on individuals who were saved

  • Catholic Church, Russian/Serbian orthodox, Anglican Church

  • Controlled by church organizations

  1. Biblical Christianity

  • Ritual worship is pared to a minimum and is directed attention to the bible is paramount

  • Methodist, Canada/United Church, Presbyterian

  • Include Protestant reformation

  1. Mystical Christianity

  • Least in terms of ritual

  • Attached to church in the form of monasteries and convents or hermits who live with the support and approval of church

  • Biblical has produced some separate churches whose worship emphasizes mysticism

    • Quakers and Pentecostal movements
