Our Maritime Nation

  • Philippines is among of five original island states, now numbering 22.
  • Officially recognized by the United Nations through the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as an Archipelagic state.
  • Philippines is the 2nd largest Archipelagic state in the world, with over 7,600+ islands, an irregular coastline spanning over 36, 289km.
  • Ranks as the 4th largest in the world, and has over 62% of its population living in the coastal zone.
  • Apex of the coral triangle, having over 16,800 sq km of coral reef and labeled as the global center for marine biodiversity.
  • Philippines' offshore area occupies about 2.2 million sq km includes areas with potentially vast deposits of extractive resources such as natural gas and oil in Reed Bank and Philippine Rise.
  • The country was tagged as the "Crossroads of the Pacific".
  • Philippine policies are inherently land-based despite its territory being 80% water and only 20% land.
  • This irony could be attributed to a number of factors; an outdated maritime policy, an overlooked industry, and its potential overlapping mandates and responsibilities, general confusion over our maritime domain, and a whole lot more.
  • For the Philippine Navy, incorporating the Philippines' archipelagic configuration into future maritime policy is complementary to its Active Archipelagic Defense Strategy (AADS) as this would further solidify the doctrine's foundations based on the principle of jointness with the other branches.
  • Foster more seamless maritime cooperation among the AFP other maritime stakeholders as part of the strategic approaches identified in the AADS; which would solidified through an archipelagic understanding of what constitutes as "maritime domain";
  • Expedite the passage of the Maritime Zones and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Law. Having a clearly defined maritime territory would allow the Philippines to move forward in creating more streamlined and rationalized bodies that can govern policymaking and operations in the maritime domain.
  • There has always been a compelling case for the Philippines to fully embrace its identity as an archipelagic country.
  • The Philippine Navy, apart from its duties as the protector of the ocean and seas, expected to be at the forefront of promoting initiatives that would instill an awareness and appreciation for our maritime environment.
  • More than recognition of our status as an archipelagic nation; it is imperative to cultivate a culture that embraces and embodies this immutable part of the Philippine identity.
