The Beast

a symbol used to represent the savage impulses within every human

Ralph and Piggy = rationality/ civilisation

Jack = savagery/ he believes in the beast and wants to hunt and kill it. He offers gifts to it like a God

Takes on many forms. A dream, a snake/sea monster and then the dead pilot’s body.

The real beast is the evil that lives inside the boys

Simon realises this but is killed as the other boys believe him to be the beast
