Introduction to Reproduction in Animals
Reproduction Overview: Animals, like plants, produce young ones of their own kind to ensure the continuity of their species. These young ones are referred to as offspring.
Types of Reproduction:
Asexual Reproduction: This occurs in unicellular and simple multicellular animals. It does not involve the fusion of sex cells.
Binary Fission: A method where a single parent cell divides into two equal daughter cells (e.g., Amoeba).
Multiple Fission: A process where a parent cell divides into many daughter cells (also seen in Amoeba).
Budding: A method where a small outgrowth or "bud" forms on the parent body, develops into a young individual, and eventually detaches (e.g., Hydra).
Sexual Reproduction: This is the primary method of reproduction in complex animals, requiring two parents (a male and a female) and the fusion of specialized sex cells.
Fundamentals of Sexual Reproduction
Definition: Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of special sex cells known as gametes from two parents to produce a new individual.
Gametes:
Male Gamete: Known as sperm.
Female Gamete: Known as eggs or ova (singular: ovum).
Zygote: The structure formed by the fusion of a sperm and an ovum. It is the first cell of the new organism and eventually develops into a baby and then an adult.
Classification of Animals by Sex Organs:
Unisexual Animals: Individuals that have separate male and female reproductive systems (e.g., humans).
Bisexual (Hermaphrodite) Animals: Individuals that possess both male and female sex organs in the same body (e.g., earthworm and leech).
Key Events in Sexual Reproduction
Gametogenesis: The formation of gametes in the reproductive (sex) organs. This occurs through a specific type of cell division called reduction division.
Male parents produce sperm.
Female parents produce ova.
Fertilisation: The process where the nucleus of a sperm fuses with the nucleus of an ovum to form a zygote.
External Fertilisation: The fusion of gametes occurs outside the female's body. This is common in aquatic environments (e.g., frogs, fishes, and starfishes).
Internal Fertilisation: The fusion of gametes takes place inside the female's body. This occur in reptiles, insects, birds, and mammals (including humans).
Development: The overall growth of the embryo into a young one or baby.
Significance of Fertilisation and Reproductive Strategies
Genetic Inheritance: The new individual inherits characters from both parents. This explains why children resemble both the mother and the father in different aspects and why siblings resemble each other.
Oviparous Animals: Animals that lay eggs. Examples include insects, fishes, frogs, birds, and reptiles.
Viviparous Animals: Animals that give birth to live babies and nurse them. Most mammals fall into this category.
Exceptions in Mammals: While most mammals are viviparous, the duck-billed platypus and the spiny anteater (Echidna) are mammals that lay eggs.
The Human Male Reproductive System
General Characteristics: Humans are unisexual. Males and females exhibit physical differences known as secondary sexual characters.
Components of the Male System:
Testes: Two oval-shaped organs located within the scrotum (a sac formed by a fold of skin) outside the abdominal cavity. Inside the testes are coiled tubes where sperm are produced.
Functions: Production of sperm and the male sex hormone, testosterone.
Scrotum Temperature: The scrotum maintains a temperature approximately lower than the internal body temperature, which is the optimal condition for sperm maturation.
Epididymis: A structure close to the testis where sperm mature and are stored.
Sperm Ducts (Vasa Deferentia): Tubes starting from the epididymis that carry and eject sperm into the urethra.
Urethra: A tube extending through the penis that serves as a common passage for both urine and sperm.
Penis: The muscular, erectile copulatory organ used to deliver sperm into the female vagina.
Accessory Glands: These include the Seminal Vesicles, Prostate Gland, and Cowper's glands. Their secretions combine with sperm to form semen.
Semen: A thick, whitish liquid containing both sperm and the nutritive/protective secretions from accessory glands.
The Mature Human Sperm: Consists of a Head (containing the Acrosome and Nucleus), Neck, Middle piece, and a Tail (flagellum) for motility.
Role of Testosterone: Initiates the development of a muscular body, widening of the chest, growth of facial hair (beard), hoarseness of voice, and maturation of the testes during puberty.
The Human Female Reproductive System
Components of the Female System:
Ovaries: A pair of organs situated in the abdominal cavity. They produce the female gametes (ova) and hormones (estrogen and progesterone).
Oviducts (Fallopian Tubes): Funnel-shaped, coiled muscular tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus. The open end near the ovary features finger-like projections called fimbriae.
Uterus (Womb): A broad, pear-shaped muscular chamber where the fertilised ovum develops. It provides protection and nourishment to the embryo.
Vagina: A wide muscular tube that receives sperm from the male and connects to the uterus via the cervix.
Ovulation: The process of releasing a single ovum from one of the two ovaries. This happens alternately every month. The ovum is collected by the oviducal funnel of the fallopian tube.
Human Fertilisation and Embryo Development
Site of Fertilisation: In humans, fertilisation occurs in the anterior part of the oviduct (fallopian tube).
Zygote Formation: A single sperm penetrates the egg membrane to fuse nuclei. Though many sperm may surround the egg, only one penetrates.
Path to Implantation:
The zygote begins dividing immediately to form a ball of cells.
As it travels down the oviduct toward the uterus, the cells multiply and differentiate into tissues and organ systems.
This structure is now the embryo.
Implantation: The attachment of the embryo to the thick wall of the uterus. Once this occurs, the woman is considered pregnant.
The Placenta: A specialized organ developed from the embryo that connects it to the uterine wall.
Umbilical Cord: The structure that attaches the developing baby to the placenta. Together, they act as the baby's life-line.
Functions of the Placenta:
Provides nutrients and oxygen to the baby.
Protects the baby from physical jerks and injuries.
Removes carbon dioxide () and harmful excretory wastes.
Produces growth hormones.
Passes immunity from the mother to the baby.
Foetus: The stage of development (reached at approximately two months) when the embryo begins to resemble a human form with recognizable body parts.
Gestation Period: The full term of development in the womb, which lasts approximately in humans.
Parturition: The biological term for the act of giving birth to a baby.
