single user licence vs site licence

single user licence allows to install only one copy (like on CD or DVD) you are not allowed to install on other computers.

site licenses are also called Volume licenses allows a company or organisation an unrestricted number of installations of the software.

Freeware is fully functioning software that can be used and copied without any restrictions.

Shareware is software you can use for a trial period. When the trial period is over you will need to pay for it

Open source software freely used, modified and distributed but may not be sold. Support and documentation may be charged for but not the source code.

Disadvantages of open-source software

• no guarantee of quality or that it works

• many versions of the same product it may look and work different on another computer.

• found on the internet download files are big this is a problem for people with limited data or slow Wi-Fi.

• not as widely used.

• documentation and support are hard to access.

copy right- legal right to make copies and publish or sell products.

Intellectual property- recognizes ownership of person that developed product

creative common- NPO that promotes the sharing and free use of knowledge or products legally.

Types of System Software

• Utility programs are used to assist the user to perform maintenance tasks related to managing a computer

• Compression software is used to make a compressed version of a file. It reduces the size of a file like email attachments so that it takes up less storage. This is known as zipping. Multiple files can be compressed into a single folder

Back up utilities are important because:

• files can be accidentally deleted or overwritten with the wrong version of the file

• files can become corrupt

• storage devices can sometimes fail

a specialized backup utility PROGRAM SHOULD BE USED TO MAKE SURE ALL YOUR FILES are backed up correctly

Tips for backing up:

• keep the backups safe not on the same computer

• keep at least one backup off-site incase of emergency

• back up your data files as you can re-install the software
