University Redo: Advice for Incoming Students

Class Registration: Location Matters

  • Refer to School Map: Always refer to a school map when registering for classes to visualize distances.
  • Minimize Travel Time:
    • Consider the distance from your residence to the class building.
    • If multiple buildings are available for an 08:30 class, choose the closest one (e.g., 5 minutes instead of 20 minutes).
  • Account for Weather: Remember to account for bad weather conditions like snow and rain, which can make long walks between classes difficult.

Professor Selection: RateMyProf is Your Friend

  • Heed RateMyProf: Utilize RateMyProf to select professors; avoid professors (especially new ones) without ratings.
  • Avoid Potentially Bad Experiences: Don't risk taking a class with an unknown professor, as it might turn out to be a negative experience.

Class Time Selection: Know Your Preferences

  • Avoid 08:30 Classes (If Not a Morning Person): If you're not a morning person, avoid scheduling classes at 08:30.
  • Recognize Sleep Patterns: You might end up sleeping through early morning classes and having to catch up later, negating the initial perceived benefit of having more free time.

Class Scheduling: Clump vs. Spread

  • Prefer Clumped Classes: Consider clumping classes together.
    • Example: Three consecutive one-hour lectures from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
  • Avoid Spread-Out Classes: Avoid scheduling classes with long breaks in between.
    • Example: A class followed by a one-hour break and then another class.
  • Time Management: Spread-out classes waste a significant amount of time that could be used more productively.
