Addition

• What is addition?
  • Addition means putting two or more things together.
  • When we add, the number usually gets bigger.
• Sign for addition:
  • We use the plus sign $(+)$ for addition.
  • For example, when you see $2 + 1$, it means you are adding $2$ and $1$.
• Example:
  • If you have $3$ red balls and $2$ blue balls, how many balls do you have altogether?
  • $3$ red balls $+$ $2$ blue balls $=$ $5$ balls.
  • So, $3 + 2 = 5$.

Subtraction

• What is subtraction?
  • Subtraction means taking away some things from a group.
  • When we subtract, the number usually gets smaller.
• Sign for subtraction:
  • We use the minus sign $(--)$ for subtraction.
  • For example, when you see $5 - 2$, it means you are taking $2$ away from $5$.
• Example:
  • If you have $7$ candies and you eat $3$ candies, how many candies are left?
  • $7$ candies $--$ $3$ candies $=$ $4$ candies.
  • So, $7 - 3 = 4$.
