background
what is the greatest crisis our world faces today?
chosen disciplines:
politics
sociology
initial ideas:
party polarisation
increasingly leading to non-cooperation between leaders, who are solely focusing on specific issues or trying to retain power
increased social tension, where different people place value on one issue and disregard/belittle any others, attributing all issues to that one field eg the discourse on immigration
has potential for greater problems eg political violence (Charlie Kirk & response), wars, general divisions which reverse the general shift toward globalisation
anti-intellectualism
feeds into the AI problem, political manipulation, societal divisions, receptiveness to unverified ‘information’, etc
What would be the greatest crisis of discipline 1 (it doesn’t matter which discipline you choose to be ‘discipline 1’)?
The greatest crisis, from a political perspective, is party polarisation
Now take your other discipline. What does this other discipline bring to an understanding of the crisis?
From a sociological perspective, the greatest crisis is anti-intellectualism
this undoubtedly feeds into party polarisation, because without people taking it upon themselves to research issues in society and educate themselves holistically, it becomes easier for increasingly populist parties to appeal to the electorate via emotions, rather than basing solutions on facts.
How does this change your understanding of the crisis as a whole?
this changes my understanding of the crisis as a whole, where from a merely political perspective, it is not too difficult to simply blame leaders and those in power as the causes of increased division. Whilst they play a significant role, it is also up to the electorate, who hold the right and responsibility to vote figures into power, to properly educate themselves, in order to avoid manipulation.
