the turing test vs searle's chinese room
first robot to successfully pass turing test called ‘Eliza’
john searle’s ‘chinese room’:
» aims to disprove Alan Turing’s claims that if a person can be convinced that the computer they are communicating with is human then the computer can be said to ‘think’
» Searle proposed ‘the Chinese room’: a non-Chinese speaking person trapped in a room with lots of Chinese symbols they do not understand. And in addition, a book of instructions about how to interpret those symbols. On the other side, the trapper person uses the instruction book to interpret the symbols and to reply on paper using the correct Chinese symbols. The Chinese speaker would be convinced they are having a conversation with someone who understands Chinese. However, Searle says this is not the case. The trapped person is merely imitating their ability to speak Chinese. They don’t actually understand Chinese. Therefore, they cannot be said to think.
