Conjugated vaccines are special vaccines designed to improve the immune response in young children, especially against certain bacterial infections.
🧫 Why Are They Needed?
Some bacteria have a polysaccharide capsule (sugar coating) that protects them from the immune system.
These polysaccharides are T-independent antigens, meaning they do not strongly activate the immune system, especially in children under 2 years.
Young children’s immune systems are immature and respond poorly to these sugar-only antigens.
🧪 How Do Conjugated Vaccines Work?
To fix this problem:
Scientists link (chemically combine or "conjugate") the polysaccharide with a protein, like diphtheria or tetanus toxoid.
Proteins are T-dependent antigens, which do trigger a strong immune response involving T-helper cells.
This combination "tricks" the immune system into treating the sugar part as a serious threat, producing strong and lasting immunity, even in infants.
