Introduction to Solutions: Solutes & Solvents

  • A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
    • Typically composed of:
      1. Solvent (liquid)
      2. Solute (solid)
  • Examples:
    • Salt solution
    • Coffee
    • Sodium hydroxide solution
  • Aqueous solutions (aq):
    • All of the above examples are aqueous solutions because they are all solids dissolved in water.
  • Solutions are not limited to solvents and solutes.
    • Gas solutions also exist.
      • Different gases may be mixed together.
      • A gas may be dissolved in a liquid.
