Introduction to Solutions: Solutes & Solvents
Introduction to Solutions: Solutes & Solvents
- A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
- Typically composed of:
- Solvent (liquid)
- Solute (solid)
- Examples:
- Salt solution
- Coffee
- Sodium hydroxide solution
- Aqueous solutions (aq):
- All of the above examples are aqueous solutions because they are all solids dissolved in water.
- Solutions are not limited to solvents and solutes.
- Gas solutions also exist.
- Different gases may be mixed together.
- A gas may be dissolved in a liquid.
