  • psychopathology- field devoted to the study of abnormal behavior to describe, predict, explain, etc. abnormal patterns
  • treatment- therapy consists of a helper, sufferer, and points of connection between the two
  • anxiety is “best” treated, psycho is worst
  • ancient societies believed mental illness was caused by evil spirits/sins
  • rise of asylums in the 1500s- became “prisons” due to overcrowding
  • invention of psychotropic medications in the 1950s- lead to deinstitutionalization

  • meta-analysis- “study of studies” putting results of many studies together
  • trephination- cutting holes into the skull to “let out demons”
  • somatogenic view- MI is the result of physical causes
  • psychogenic view- MI is the result of psychological causes
  • utica crib- restraining device used in the mid 1800s
  • psychoanalysis- theory or treatment of abnormal mental functioning as a result of unconscious forces
