Authorial Intention

Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol not just to entertain, but to inspire social change.

He wanted readers to:

  • Recognise the suffering of the poor and feel moral responsibility toward others.

  • Reconsider the true meaning of Christmas — not greed or materialism, but charity, family, and goodwill.

  • See that redemption is possible for everyone — even someone as cold and selfish as Scrooge.

Dickens uses Scrooge’s transformation as a moral lesson: if one person can change, so can society. The novella ends with Scrooge becoming generous and compassionate, symbolising Dickens’s hope for a kinder, more equal world.
