Morphology

Morphology is the branch of linguistics that studies the structure and form of words in a language, including the analysis of prefixes, suffixes, and root words.

Here are some common examples of what you are expected to find and write about when doing your morphology paragraph:

  • suffix

  • prefix

  • tense

  • contraction

  • possessive pronoun

  • double comparative (tautology → more better)

  • deleted plural: when plurality is implied without modifying the word to its plural form. This happens when the plural marker (such as -s / -es in English) is "deleted" or omitted, yet the meaning of the plural remains clear from context. It often occurs due to ellipsis or a stylistic choice in informal language.

  • blending: A word formed by combining the meanings and parts of the sounds of 2 or more words together → ties into neologisms, which is used as a link between morphology and lexis
