Turner Syndrome

Turner’s syndrome is a genetic condition that affects females and is caused by the partial or complete absence of one of the two X chromosomes (typically written as 45,X instead of the usual 46,XX).


🔬 Cause

  • Normally, females have two X chromosomes (46,XX).

  • In Turner’s syndrome, one X chromosome is missing or altered (e.g., 45,X or 45,X/46,XX mosaicism).


👧 Who Does It Affect?

  • It affects only females.

  • Occurs in about 1 in 2,500 female births worldwide.


🧬 Genetic Variants

  • 45,X: Complete absence of one X chromosome.

  • Mosaic Turner’s syndrome: Some cells have 45,X, others have 46,XX or other variants.

  • Structural abnormalities: One X chromosome may be partially missing or rearranged.


📋 Common Features

Physical characteristics and symptoms vary, but may include:

Physical:
  • Short stature

  • Webbed neck (extra folds of skin on the neck)

  • Low-set ears

  • Broad chest with widely spaced nipples

  • Lymphedema (swelling of hands and feet, especially at birth)

  • Delayed puberty or absence of menstruation

  • Infertility (due to underdeveloped ovaries)

Medical:
  • Heart defects (e.g., coarctation of the aorta)

  • Kidney abnormalities

  • Hearing loss

  • Thyroid problems

  • Increased risk of diabetes and osteoporosis

Cognitive:
  • Normal intelligence in most cases

  • May have difficulties with spatial reasoning, math, or memory


🧑‍⚕ Diagnosis

  • Prenatal tests (amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling)

  • Postnatal karyotyping (chromosome analysis from a blood sample)


💊 Treatment

There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed:

  • Growth hormone therapy (to help increase height)

  • Estrogen replacement therapy (to start puberty and support bone health)

  • Fertility treatment (e.g., IVF with donor eggs if pregnancy is desired)

  • Regular monitoring for heart, kidney, and thyroid health


Prognosis

  • With proper medical care, most girls and women with Turner’s syndrome lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

  • Fertility is usually affected, but assisted reproductive technologies can help.
