Kant notes

contradiction in conception: trying to universalise the maxim would lead to a logical self-contradiction e.g. stealing example (expand upon)

contradiction in will: logically possible but you wouldn’t rationally will to universalise the maxim. everyone wants to rationally will things, rationally will the means to will the end. don;t help other people - takes away the means that an end, so if universalised people wouldn’t be able to reach their ends. Universalising the maxim ‘Don’t help others’ takes away the means to ends, taking away the means stops you from willing the ends because to will the ends you must will the means.

Will = choosing or deciding

perfect duty — absolute duty which you cannot opt out of, you have to do it

imperfect duty — ideally you do it but you don’t have to

if universalising a maxim involving stealing is a contradiction in conception, then you have a perfect duty to ‘not lie’

if its a contradiction in will, its an imperfect duty

competing duties would only ever arise out of two competing perfect duties
