Design Thinking: A Human-Centered Approach to Innovation

Design Thinking: A Human-Centered Approach
  • Core Principle: Design thinking is fundamentally characterized by its adoption of a human-centered approach. This means that the entire process of developing solutions or innovations revolves around understanding and addressing the needs, desires, and experiences of the end-users or target audience.

  • Application to Innovation: This human-centered perspective is applied directly to the realm of innovation. The objective is to create novel solutions that genuinely resonate with people, making them more likely to be adopted and successful.

  • Dual Criteria for Innovation: When taking a human-centered approach to innovation, design thinking aims to identify solutions that satisfy two critical criteria:

    • Technologically Feasible: The proposed solution must be practical and achievable with current or foreseeable technology and resources. It addresses the question: Can we build this with what's available?

    • Economically Viable: The proposed solution must be sustainable from a financial standpoint. This considers aspects such as cost-effectiveness, market demand, revenue potential, and long-term profitability. It addresses the question: Can this generate value and be sustained over time?
