• Testing:

  • gram pos, cocci

  • catalase pos

  • 7.5% salt tolerant

  • coagulase pos

  • clumping factor pos

  • DNAse pos

  • mannitol pos

  • Beta- hemo

• Virulence:

  • pore forming toxins (hemolysis and cytotoxin)

• Infections:

  • Cutaneous infections → folliculitis, foruncles, carbuncles, impetigo

  • Deeper infections → abscesses, bacteriamia, osteomyelitis, septicemia

Staphylococcus epidermidis

• Testing:

  • gram pos, cocci

  • catalase pos

  • 7.5% salt tolerant

  • coagulase neg

  • mannitol neg

  • non - hemolytic

• Virulence factor:

  • biofilm

• Infections:

  • catheter infections
