Hue (Color Name)
  • Definition
    • The attribute that identifies a color by name (e.g., red, blue, green).
    • Only colors of the visible spectrum are “pure” hues.
  • Pure vs. Impure Hues
    • Pure hue = a single wavelength range.
    • Impure hue = mixture of several wavelengths.
    • Examples of impure reds: scarlet, rose, maroon.
  • Significance
    • Hue is the basic identifier used in all subsequent color manipulations (value and intensity changes).
Value (Lightness or Darkness)
  • Definition
    • The degree of lightness or darkness within a color.
    • Progresses from pure white (lightest) to pure black (darkest) with continuous graded grays between.
  • Key Terms
    • Tint: light value produced by adding white to a hue.
    • Figure 8 demonstration.
    • Shade: dark value produced by adding black to a hue.
    • Figure 9 demonstration.
    • Tone: middle‐value areas between tints and shades.
  • Common Misuse
    • Everyday language may ask for a “shade of blue” when the speaker really wants the value (light vs. dark) rather than a true “shade” (darkened version).
    • Technically, a “light shade” is impossible; shade is intrinsically darker than the pure hue.
  • Determination by Light
    • Areas receiving less light appear darker; areas with excessive light lose detail.
    • Without value contrast, shapes are indistinguishable.
    • Strong value contrast directs visual focus.
Intensity (Saturation / Chroma)
  • Definition
    • The brightness or dullness of a color—independent of light/dark value.
  • Descriptors
    • High intensity: strong, rich, forceful, vivid.
    • Low intensity: subdued, soft, muted, drab.
  • Reduction ("Toning Down") Methods
    • Mix the hue with its complementary or near‐complementary color.
    • Mix the hue with white, black, or gray.

  • Preparation
