- Definition of an Element: An element is a substance which cannot be split into two or more simpler substances by chemical reactions.
- Simplest Form of Matter: Elements are considered the simplest kind of matter because of their inability to be broken down further by chemical means.

- Constituents: All matter on Earth consists of elements.
- Splitting Restrictions: While elements cannot be split by chemical substances or reactions, they are the primary building blocks.
- Atoms: An atom is the smallest particle of an element.
- Molecules: These are made of atoms. They can consist of 2 or more than 2 atoms, which can be either the same or different elements.
Discovery and Naming of Elements
- Total Count: Scientists have discovered more than 100 elements so far.
- Natural vs. Man-made:
- Naturally Occurring: Approximately 90 of these elements occur naturally.
- Synthetic: The remaining elements are man-made.
- Naming Conventions: Elements are sometimes named after famous scientists.
- Example: The element Einsteinium is named after a famous scientist (Albert Einstein).
