Founders of the Hotel Industry

  • Conrad Hilton (1887-1979):
    • Purchased Mobley Hotel in 1919.
    • Acquired Chicago Hilton, Palmer House, Plaza, and Waldorf=Astoria hotels after World War II.
    • Established the first major hotel chain in 1954 by purchasing Statler Hotels.
    • Hilton Brands: Hilton Garden Inns, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns, Harrison Conference Centers, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Red Lion Hotels and Inns, Conrad International.
  • Kemmons Wilson:
    • Founder of the Holiday Inn chain.
    • Introduced the central reservation system HOLIDEX.
  • Ray Shultz:
    • Follower of Kemmons Wilson.
    • Started Hampton Inn in 1984.
    • Concept: Select service and cost consciousness.
  • J.W. Marriott (1900-1985):
    • Established the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel in 1957.
    • Marriott Brands: Courtyard, Residence Inn, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, Fairfield Inn, Spring Hill Suites, Towne Place Suites, Marriott Hotels, Resorts, and Suites, JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts.
  • Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore:
    • Founded the first Sheraton in 1937 (Stonehaven, Springfield, MA).
    • First hotel chain listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
    • Acquired by ITT Corp in 1968; later owned by Starwood Hotels.
    • Sheraton Brands: Sheraton, Westin, Four Points, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W Hotels.
