Beginning of Nato

-The nations of Western Europe had been getting close

-In March 1948, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and Britian signed the treaty of Brussels

-In April 19, a total of 32 nations joined Nato

-members would assist if attacked

-committed to defending allies

Nations in Nato:-US, Canada, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Iceland, France, Britain, Luxembourg, Belgium, Greece, Turkey

Warsaw Pact (May, 1955)

-Military alliance w/Lithuania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Eastern Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Soviet Union

-Aimed to defend and maintain Soviet Union influence in Eastern Europe

-Affected other continents too

Comecon (1949)

-A trade and economic organization established in 1949 by Soviet Union

-Aimed to promote economic cooperation

Creation of Israel

-Middle east became a major point of Cold War Rivalry

Creation of State

-Great Britain had political influence in region under mandates from League of Nations

-After WW2, both Zionist who wanted a sate, and Arabs who sought self determination challenged the British

British Balfour Deceleration

-Israel was a creation of Zionists (Theodor Herzl and Chaim Weizmann in 1897)

-In 1917, during WW1, the Balfour Deceleration established Jewish State in already occupied Palestine (Arabs mad)

-Zionist state was then established and supported by Western World (guilt cause of Nazis and Canal)

-In 1947, British handed over their problem to UN

-They divided state into 2 states, Jews and Arabs

-Arabs mad at invasion, they themselves become displaced

Israel Independence

-In May 1948, British withdrew from Palestine

-Yishov declared Independence of a new Jewish State called Israel (May 14)

-President Truman recognizes it

-Israel then was invaded by Arabs

-Israel won, expanded its borders beyond UNs limits

-Jerusalem was divided, Israel conquered it

-To this day, there’s conflict between Arabs and Israel

-US LOVES ISRAEL (Capitalism)

-SOVIET UNION AIDES ARABS (Communism)

The Korean War

-US begins interveing armed aggression in Asia, primarily Korea

-Korea was occupied by Japanese, then was finally set free

-It was divided into 2 parts

-DPR of Korea was supported by Soviet Union

-Republic of Korea was supported by US

Korea Invasion

-After WW2, Korea Split

-On June 25, North Korea communist forces (trained by Soviet Union) jnvade South Korea

-US just wants to contain Communism

-On June 27, Truman orders US forces to assist South Korea

-UN Security Council condemns invasion and 15-nation fighting force

China

-Late in 1950, the Chinese, responding to the approach of the UN

-American forces had to retreat

-American wanted to eliminate Chinese, who they thought were soviet puppets

-In reality, however, China hated Russia

-US saw it as pressure from Communism

End of War

-Ceasefire brings war to close by June 16, 1953 conducted by Eisenhower

-4 million dead

-DMZ-38th parallel established
