Phase 1: Meaning and Spirit of Historical Consciousness

  • Etymology of the Filipino Concept of History:

    • Malay (Awareness/Awakening): Derived from the concepts of knowing and awakening the mind. Having "malay" means a person is conscious of themselves, others, and the state of their environment.

    • Philosophical Quote on Malay: "Ang taong walang malay ay madaling akayin sa kung saan-saan nang hindi niya namamalayan ang kapahamakan" (A person without awareness is easily led anywhere without realizing the danger).

    • Saysay (Significance/Value): Derived from the concept of purpose or importance. History is not just a list of past events but meaningful narratives that provide direct benefit and guidance for current life.

    • Philosophical Quote on Saysay: "Kung walang saysay ang kwento ng kahapon, mawawalan din ng kapararakan ang bawat hakbang natin ngayon" (If the story of yesterday has no meaning, every step we take today will also lose its purpose).

    • The Philosophical Formula: Malay+Saysay=KasaysayanMalay + Saysay = Kasaysayan. True historical consciousness is the understanding of meaningful narratives of the past for the benefit and safety of the present.

  • The Four Pillars of Filipino Historiography:

    • Teodoro Agoncillo (Analysis of Force): Views history as a "Mirror of Society." He advocates for the analysis of social forces to avoid repeating past errors.

    • Agoncillo's Core Quote: "History deals with the past, not with the future. We use history to avoid the mistakes of the past, not to recreate the very same events. You cannot."

    • Renato Constantino (Weapon for Struggle): Views history as analytical and liberating. It is an instrument to open minds for social change and to free Filipinos from colonial mentality.

    • Zeus Salazar (Pantayong Pananaw): Views history from an internal perspective ("From us, for us"). History should be a meaningful narrative for our own culture, centered on the welfare of Filipinos and utilizing the native language so it is understood by common citizens.

    • Ambeth Ocampo (Everyday History): Emphasizes personal reflection. To love history, one must see it in themselves and their family, making the past easier to understand through daily life and activities.

Phase 2: Purpose and Significance of History

  • Key Objectives of Historical Consciousness:

    • Identity (Pagkakakilanlan): History defines who we are as a race, providing answers about culture and origins. It serves as a shield against globalization that may destroy local culture.

    • Lessons and Direction (Aral at Direksyon): Learning from the successes and failures of ancestors provides a direction to avoid wrong political decisions.

    • Proverbial Basis: "Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan" (He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never reach his destination).

    • Strengthening Nationalism (Pagpapatibay ng Nasyonalismo): Historical awareness fosters unity and concern for fellow Filipinos, going beyond singing the national anthem to being ready to serve the community.

    • Critical Thinking (Mapanuring Pag-iisip): History serves as an information filter (Pansala ng Impormasyon). It trains students to look for evidence and primary sources to distinguish truth from propaganda and fake news.

  • Comparison: Rote Memorization vs. True Historical Consciousness (DepEd Bureau of Curriculum Development):

Aspect

Rote Memorization (Mababaw na Memoryasyon)

True Historical Consciousness (Tunay na Kamalayan)

Focus

Memorizing specific dates, names, and places without deep context.

Analyzing causes, effects, and the relationship of events to current life.

Primary Goal

To pass exams or get high grades in class.

To be aware in order to make wise decisions for the good of the community and nation.

Effect on Mind

Easily forgotten after the exam; no personal connection to issues.

Remains a critical citizen who participates in social development and change.

Phase 3: Historical Connection to Modern Society

  • Chronology of Four Phases of Philippine History:

    1. Ancient (Sinauna): Rich indigenous government, culture, and beliefs prior to foreign colonizers.

    2. Colonial (Kolonyal): Long struggle against the abuses of Spain, America, and Japan.

    3. Revolution (Himagsikan): Emergence of nationalism, the tearing of the cedula, and the declaration of the country's first Republic.

    4. Present (Kasalukuyan): Challenges of modern society, cultural changes, and the strengthening of honest citizenship.

  • Case Study: EDSA People Power (1986):

    • Historical Context: Millions of Filipinos joined hands to express a desire for democracy without bloodshed. Key elements: unity, flowers, and prayers against tanks.

    • Modern Connection: The spirit of EDSA is now lived through responsible digital citizenship to combat disinformation.

    • Digital Context: Statistics show a severe challenge of disinformation in digital spaces, requiring historical awareness to identify the truth.

Phase 4: Decision-Making and Action

  • Theoretical Framework: Pantayong Pananaw (Dr. Zeus Salazar):

    • Definition: A theory aiming to discuss national history and culture using the Filipino language, experience, and perspective, centered on the welfare of the citizens rather than a foreign "lens."

    • Pang-kami Perspective: Writing history to explain ourselves to foreigners using their standards.

    • Pang-sayo Perspective: Discussing our culture using a foreign language to favor the viewpoint of another country.

    • Pantayong Pananaw: Filipinos talking to other Filipinos, using the native language, about themselves, for national progress.

  • Guide for Active/Responsible Citizenship:

    • Analytical Mind: Analyze causes and effects of news before believing.

    • Digital Citizenship: Combat the spread of disinformation on social media.

    • Love for Country: Show concern through honest obedience to laws.

    • Local Advocacy: Participate in projects within one's own barangay or town.

Questions & Discussion

  • Introductory Game (Pinoy Henyo) Items:

    • Famous Filipinos: Jose Rizal (National Hero, author of Noli Me Tangere/El Filibusterismo), Andres Bonifacio (Supremo of Katipunan), Manny Pacquiao (Famous boxer, symbol of national strength).

    • Historical Places: Ifugao Rice Terraces, Bagumbayan (shrine where Rizal was shot), Fort Santiago (Spanish fortress in Intramuros).

    • Important Events: EDSA People Power (1986), Independence Declaration (June 12, 1898, in Kawit, Cavite), First Democratic Constitution (Barasoain Church).

  • Core Discussion Questions:

    • What happens if the youth forget these moments? National direction will be lost, and it will be easy for foreigners or fake news to poison the people's minds.

    • How to handle a barangay conflict involving fake news on Facebook? Check the source of news, use the lesson of peaceful revolution (EDSA) to avoid conflict, and act as a bridge for correct information.

  • Formative Quiz:

    1. Who is the historian who said history is a "Weapon for Struggle"? Answer: Renato Constantino.

    2. What word means having an awakened and conscious mind? Answer: Malay.

    3. Why did Agoncillo say we cannot change the past but only use it to avoid mistakes? Answer: Because the purpose of history is to serve as a lesson and guide for the current decisions of society.
