*FACS and Emotional Expression Notes
FACS Findings
Emotional Perception: Individuals globally identify basic emotions; expressions are biological and universal.
Sex Differences:
Women are generally more accurate in recognizing emotions and more expressive in displaying them.
Men's lower expressiveness may stem from cultural display rules, not biology.
Universal Expressions: Emotional facial movements are consistent across cultures.
Hierarchy of Emotions
Universal: Appear first, biologically rooted.
Basic: Derived from universal emotions, appear later, influenced by culture.
Subtle: Appear later, influenced by culture (associated with positive (++) and negative (--) effects).
Cultural Display Rules
Determine the appropriate timing and manner of emotional expression.
Emotional expression is a product of both innate biological factors and cultural influences.
