*FACS and Emotional Expression Notes

FACS Findings

  • Emotional Perception: Individuals globally identify basic emotions; expressions are biological and universal.

  • Sex Differences:

    • Women are generally more accurate in recognizing emotions and more expressive in displaying them.

    • Men's lower expressiveness may stem from cultural display rules, not biology.

  • Universal Expressions: Emotional facial movements are consistent across cultures.

Hierarchy of Emotions

  • Universal: Appear first, biologically rooted.

  • Basic: Derived from universal emotions, appear later, influenced by culture.

  • Subtle: Appear later, influenced by culture (associated with positive (++) and negative (--) effects).

Cultural Display Rules

  • Determine the appropriate timing and manner of emotional expression.

  • Emotional expression is a product of both innate biological factors and cultural influences.
