Chapter 5: Ciliary Body

1. Functions of the Ciliary Body

  • The ciliary body is involved in several key functions in the eye:   - Supports the iris.   - Maintains the shape of the lens (crystalline lens).   - Participates in the accommodation (focusing) process of the lens.   - Produces aqueous humor (the fluid in the eye) from the anterior surface of the ciliary processes.   - Facilitates the drainage of aqueous humor, which helps to regulate intraocular pressure.

2. Structure of the Ciliary Body

  • The ciliary body is situated between the scleral spur and the ora serrata.

  • It has a triangular shape with the following components:   - Ciliary Muscle (Smooth muscle fibers arranged in different orientations):     - Longitudinal fibers (outer fibers): Arranged vertically.     - Radial fibers (spoke-like fibers): Arranged radially.     - Circular fibers (inner fibers): Arranged in a circular pattern.     - Contraction of the ciliary muscle results in widening of the anterior chamber angle, opening of Schlemm's canal, and relaxation of the zonules, leading to thickening of the lens.   - Vascular Layer: Supplies blood to the ciliary body.   - Bruch's Membrane: The basement membrane of the pigment epithelium.   - Pigment Epithelium Layer (composed of two layers):     - Outer Pigment Epithelium: Continuous with the retinal pigment epithelium.     - Inner Pigment Epithelium: Continuous with the neural layer of the retina.   - Blood Supply: Receives blood from the large ciliary artery circle and drains via the venous system.

3. Types of Muscles Involved

  • Striated Muscle (Voluntary Muscle):   - This muscle type has visible striations and is under voluntary control.   - Its activities are influenced by cranial nerves.

  • Smooth Muscle (Involuntary Muscle):   - This muscle has no visible striations and is also referred to as involuntary muscle.   - It constitutes the internal muscle and operates without conscious control.

4. Anatomy Related to the Ciliary Body

  • The Canal of Schlemm is present alongside the ciliary body, around the scleral limbus.

  • Ciliary processes project from the body into the anterior chamber:   - Formed by both the longitudinal and radial fibers of the ciliary muscle.

5. Key Structures Around the Ciliary Body

  • Key adjacent structures include:   - Cornea: The transparent front part of the eye.   - Descemet Membrane of the Cornea: A basement membrane for the corneal endothelium.   - Anterior Chamber: The space between the cornea and lens filled with aqueous humor.   - Conjunctiva: A membrane covering the white part of the eyeball.   - Sclera: The outermost layer of the eyeball, commonly referred to as the white part of the eye.   - Iris: The colored part of the eye, located in front of the lens.   - Tenon Capsule: A fibrous membrane that surrounds the eyeball and separates it from the surrounding fat tissue.   - Schwalbe's Line: An anatomical landmark on the cornea.
