Who makes foreignn policy?

Exsecutive Branch

  • President: main leader of foreign policy

  • Secretary of State: helps the president with foreign affairs

  • Ambassadors: represent the U.S. in other countries

  • National Security Council (NSC): advises on saftey & foreign issues

Legestlative Branch

  • Congress:

    • Approves treaties (senate)

    • Declares war

    • Controls money spent on foriegn aid, military etc

  1. National Security- keep america safe

  2. World Peace- avoid wars/conflicts

  3. Promote Democracy- support fair governments worldwide

  4. Support Human Rights- help people live with freedom

  5. Economic Growth- encourage trade & jobs

Methods of Prusuing Foreign Policy

  • Diplomacy- talking it out with other countries

  • Foriegn Aid- giving help (money, food, supplies)

  • Treaties/Alliances- agreements with countries

  • Military Action- using armed forces

  • Treaties- formal agreements

  • Sanctions- punishments like stopping trade

  • Embargo- total ban on trade

  • Ambassadors- official reps sent to other nations

  • Negotiation- Talking to solve problems peacefully
