Overview of the Large Intestine
- The large intestine consists of the following main parts:
- Appendix
- Cecum
- Colon
- Rectum
- Anal Canal
- Primary function of the colon:
- Responsible for reabsorbing water and electrolytes from feces within its lumen.
- Continuous with the rectum, where feces is stored prior to defecation.
Layers of the Colon Wall
- The colon has four primary layers:
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Muscularis Propria (also called Muscularis Externa)
- Serosa
Mucosa
- Characteristics of the colon mucosa:
- Does not have distinct long villi (as seen in the small intestine).
- Composed of several structures:
- Epithelium: First layer of cells lining the mucosa.
- Types of cells in the epithelium:
- Enterocytes (also called Absorptive Cells): Simple columnar cells with microvilli that absorb water from the colon's lumen.
- Goblet Cells: Responsible for secreting mucus. The mucus appears as globular structures stained dark purple with hematoxylin and eosin stain.
- Crypts of Lieberkühn: Straight unbranched tubular glands extending through the mucosa to the muscularis mucosa. These crypts differ from those in the small intestine as they extend deeper.
- Histological observation:
- Superficial portions of crypts usually have a higher concentration of enterocytes.
- Deeper parts of the crypts contain a higher concentration of goblet cells.
- Lamina Propria: Tissue found between the crypts and epithelium, consisting of immune cells (e.g., plasma cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils, macrophages).
- Muscularis Mucosa: The deepest layer of the mucosa made of smooth muscle.
Submucosa
- Composed of:
- Dense irregular connective tissue.
- Contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and the Submucosal Plexus (Meissner's Plexus).
- Meissner's Plexus: A network of nerves that innervate the goblet cells in the mucosa and the smooth muscle of the muscularis mucosa.
Muscularis Propria (Muscularis Externa)
- Characteristics:
- Thick layer of smooth muscle allowing strong peristaltic contractions to move feces through the lumen.
- Two muscle layers:
- Inner Layer: Arranged circularly (circumferentially around the wall of the colon).
- Outer Layer: Arranged longitudinally along the colon's length, forming three long bands called Tenia Coli.
- Myenteric Plexus: A layer of nerves found between the smooth muscle layers responsible for innervating the muscularis propria muscle fibers.
Serosa
- Outermost layer of the colon wall,
- Thin layer of connective tissue that contains blood vessels and nerves, providing support and protection.
