Rhyme

• Rhyme refers to the repetition of similar sounds in the final stressed syllables of words, typically at the end of lines in poetry.

Types of Rhyme

• Perfect Rhyme

  • Definition: Rhyme where the final accented vowel and all succeeding sounds are identical.

  • Examples:

    • Cat, bat, hat

    • Tree, free, bee

• Imperfect Rhyme

  • Definition: Words that look like they are going to rhyme but do not share the same vowel or ending sound completely.

Specifics of Rhyme

• End Rhyme

  • Occurs at the end of lines in poetry.

  • Example: In a couplet the last words of both lines rhyme.

• Internal Rhyme

  • Occurs within a single line of verse.

  • Example: "I went to town to buy a round."
