The 3 States of Matter

  • Solids:

    • Characteristics: Fixed shape and fixed volume.

    • Example: A rock.

    • Molecular Behavior: Molecules are tightly packed together, limiting their movement.

  • Liquids:

    • Characteristics: Fixed volume but no fixed shape.

    • Example: Water takes the shape of its container.

    • Molecular Behavior: Molecules are close together but can move freely, allowing the liquid to flow.

  • Gases:

    • Characteristics: No fixed shape and no fixed volume.

    • Example: Air.

    • Molecular Behavior: Molecules are far apart and move rapidly, filling the available space.

  • A solution is defined as a mixture in which one substance is dissolved within another substance.

    • Solute: The substance that is being dissolved (e.g., salt in saltwater).

    • Solvent: The substance that does the dissolving (e.g., water in saltwater).

  • Note: When heat is removed from a solution, the temperature decreases, which can impact the state of the substances involved.
