Absolutely — let’s make this actually understandable, not just a bunch of vocabulary. Think of the carbon cycle as carbon moving between the atmosphere, living things, soil, oceans, and fossil fuels.

🌎 Carbon Cycle — The Big Picture

The ONE thing you need to remember:

Carbon is constantly moving around.

Most of the carbon in this diagram starts as CO₂ in the atmosphere.

Plants take in that CO₂ → carbon becomes part of the plant → animals eat plants → organisms die → decomposers break them down → carbon returns to the atmosphere.

Some carbon gets stored for a VERY long time as fossil fuels. Humans burn those fossil fuels → CO₂ goes back into the atmosphere.


🌱 PATH 1: CO₂ → Plants

Photosynthesis

CO₂ → Plants

Plants take CO₂ from the atmosphere and use sunlight to make food.

Think:

Sunlight + CO₂ → 🌱 Plant

The carbon from CO₂ becomes organic carbon in the plant.

EXAM TIP:

Photosynthesis REMOVES CO₂ from the atmosphere.


🐮 PATH 2: Plants → Animals

Eating

Plants → Animals

Animals eat plants, so the carbon stored in the plant moves into the animal.

Example:

🌱 Grass → 🐮 Cow

The carbon that was in the grass is now in the cow.

Remember:

Eating transfers carbon between living organisms.


🌱 PATH 3: Plants/Animals → CO₂

Respiration

Both plants AND animals do cellular respiration.

Organic carbon → CO₂

They break down food to get energy, and CO₂ is released back into the atmosphere.

So:

🌱 Plant → CO₂
🐮 Animal → CO₂

EXAM TIP:

Respiration RELEASES CO₂.

A common mistake is thinking only animals respire.

Plants respire too!


🍂 PATH 4: Dead organisms → Soil → CO₂

Decomposition

When plants and animals die, decomposers break them down.

Dead organisms + waste → decomposers → CO₂

Think:

🍂 Dead leaves → 🦠 Decomposers → CO₂

Some carbon stays in the soil, while some eventually returns to the atmosphere.

EXAM TIP:

Decomposition moves carbon from dead organisms into the soil and atmosphere.


🦴 PATH 5: Dead organisms → Fossil fuels

Sometimes dead organisms get buried and, over millions of years, their carbon becomes stored as:

  • Coal

  • Oil

  • Natural gas

So:

Dead organisms → Fossil fuels

This is long-term carbon storage.

EXAM TIP:

Fossil fuels are basically carbon that has been stored for a very long time.


🚗 PATH 6: Fossil fuels → CO₂

Combustion

Humans burn fossil fuels for energy.

Fossil fuels → CO₂

Examples:

🚗 Cars
🏭 Factories
Power plants

When fossil fuels are burned, their stored carbon is released as CO₂.

EXAM TIP:

Combustion = burning = releases CO₂

This is why human activity can increase atmospheric CO₂.


🌊 PATH 7: CO₂ → Ocean

Ocean uptake

The ocean can absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Atmospheric CO₂ → Ocean

Think of the ocean as a giant carbon storage area.

Some of that carbon can eventually become part of marine organisms or sediments.

EXAM TIP:

Oceans absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.


🌳 PATH 8: Plants → Soil

Root respiration

Plants also release CO₂ through respiration from their roots.

Plant carbon → CO₂

The important thing is:

Plants DON’T only take in CO₂. They also release CO₂ through respiration.
