Yes/no questions can be formed according to the pattern: Add a vowel sound.


Est-ce que + STATEMENT? Est-ce que Pierre est ici ? 

Est-ce qu’ (+ VOWEL SOUND) Est-ce qu’il est ici ? 



How to pronounce it? 

In yes/no questions, your voice should go up at the end. 

Est-ce que Paul est au café ?


In casual conversation, yes/no questions can also be formed without using “est-ce que” simply by letting your voice go up at the end of the sentence. 

  • Tu es français ?

  • Marie est en ville ?


Bonus: 

When you expect someone to agree with you, another way to form a yes/no question is to add “n’est-ce pas” at the end of the sentence. 

  • Tu es américain, n’est-ce pas ?

  • Tu aimes parler français, n’est-ce pas ?

  • Tu veux dormir, n’est-ce pas ?  


Expressions pour la conversation: 

Oui ! = Yes

Mais oui ! = Sure 

Bien sûr ! = Of course

Peut-être… =  Maybe 

Non ! = No

Mais non ! = Of course not
