Chemical Synapse

  • The chemical synapse is a primary type of signaling in the nervous system, distinguished by its use of neurotransmitters.

Components

  • Presynaptic Neuron: The neuron that sends the signal.

  • Postsynaptic Neuron: The neuron that receives the signal.

  • Synaptic Cleft: The gap between the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons.

Process

  1. Signal Arrival: When an action potential reaches the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron.

  2. Calcium Channels Open: The action potential causes calcium channels to open.

  3. Vesicle Fusion: Influx of calcium ions leads to the fusion of vesicles containing neurotransmitters with the presynaptic membrane.

  4. Neurotransmitter Release: Neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft.

  5. Passive Movement: The neurotransmitters passively diffuse across the synaptic cleft.

  6. Receptor Binding: Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.

  7. Ion Channel Modulation: Receptor binding causes ion channels to either open or close.

  8. Electrical Signal Conversion: The flow of ions through the channels converts the chemical signal back into an electrical signal in the postsynaptic neuron.
