How Laurier became Prime Minister): many French Canadians refused to vote for the Conservatives as a result of how they handled the Manitoba Schools Question, so Wilfrid Laurier (Liberal leader) became Prime Minister of Canada.

Manitoba Schools Question & Quebec
(Laurier-Greenway compromise: The majority of the school day would be non-spiritual until the last half-hour where the students would be instructed in their religion.
•Those children who spoke French would have a teacher that spoke both so they could learn English faster.
Any community with 10+ students that spoke another language could create a separate school

was made an official public holiday on May 24th, 1897, Diamond Jubilee: Laurier attended Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in England (60th anniversary on the throne) to show alligiance to the trown
Boer War (what was it: a war between dtch settlers in SA and the brits, who was involved: the British and the Boers (Dutch settlers from the Netherlands in South Africa) /why: the brits wanted to take over oranje free state and transvaal,
Canada divided– why: anglos saw the boer war as an opertunity to strenthen the relationship w britian, franco saw that the war had nothing to do with canada and wanted nothing to do with it and thought britian was sppressing the dutch.

Alaska Boundary Dispute (why: Canada wanted to negotiate part of the Alaskan boundary in order to have access to riversCanada wanted to negotiate part of the Alaskan boundary in order to have access to rivers, result:The panel examining the boundary was made up of 3 Americans, 1 British, and 2 Canadians.
