Ankle Joint (Talocrural Joint) Overview
Anatomy of the Talocrural Joint
- The ankle joint, or talocrural joint, is a hinged synovial joint.
- Bone Articulation: Formed by the distal ends of the tibia and fibula with the talus.
Stability and Structural Support
- Joint stability is maintained by the shapes of the articulating bones, surrounding muscle tendons, and strong ligaments.
- Deltoid (Medial) Ligament: Extends from the medial malleolus to the talus, navicular, and calcaneus of the tarsus.
- Lateral Ligament: Extends from the lateral malleolus to the talus and calcaneus.
