TOPIC_1-_FREEDOM

Freedom of the Human Person

  • Prudence in Choosing: Evaluate and exercise prudence in decision-making.

  • Consequence of Choice: Recognize that choices have consequences.

  • Sacrifices in Making a Choice: Understand the sacrifices involved in choices.

Session 1: Are We Really Free? Determinism vs Freewill

Determinism

  • Definition: Humans' choices are dictated by their biological, psychological, and sociological conditions. ( hindi ko ito kayang gawin dahil may sakit ako )

Biological Determinism
  • Concept: Decisions and behaviors are influenced by biological predispositions.

    • most things people do are determined by their genetic makeup, which they inherited from their parents

    • largely influenced by inherited traits rather than solely by their environment or choices.

    • Example: naging highest sa class because of genetics ( matalino parents )

Psychological Determinism
  • Concept: an idea that our actions, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are determined by past experiences and internal factors, such as our memories, emotions, and psychological states. It suggests that our decisions are influenced by these factors, rather than being completely free.

  • example - difficulty of trusting people because you have grown in a somewhat abusive household ( manyy conflicts ganon ) their difficulty with trust can be seen as a result of their past experiences, showing how psychological determinism plays out—their current behavior is shaped by their earlier life experiences.

  • Mind Levels:

    • Conscious Level: Current awareness. ( kung anong alam mo ngayon )

    • Preconscious Level: Easily retrievable memories / knowledge. ( can be brought to the present simply by remembering )

    • Unconscious Level: Underlying fears and motivations. ( cannot be easily brought to the conscious level; you need to be parang ma-trigger in order for this to be ano remembered ganon ganon )

Sociological Determinism
  • Concept: Sociological determinism is the idea that individual behaviors and choices are shaped by social factors like culture, social norms, and group influences.

    • Family, school, church, state shape thoughts and behaviors.

    • Example: 10 Commandments' influence. ( sinusunod ng halos lahat ng pilipino kaya susundin mo rin ) influenced by social factors not by personal choice

Freewill

  • Definition: Freedom exists with context; it's about being free from constraints (Viktor Frankl).

    • free will is the ability to make choices that aren't determined by prior causes or external influences. It means acting according to one's own desires and reasoning, rather than being controlled by fate or circumstances.

  • Humans possess self-determination to create their identity and decisions.

    • self determination is the innate capacity of human to control his/her decisions

Session 2: Human Person as a Being Condemned to be Free (Sartre)

  • EXISTENCE- How a person lives his life.

ESSENCE- The WHATNESS/IDENTITY of a person

  • Existence Precedes Essence: Life is created by one's actions, not predetermined ( nagagawa natin or nakikita natin ang purpose ng ating buhay sa kung paano tayo mabuhay/actions )

    • A human person is Free not only because he has the CAPACITY TO DECIDE OR CHOOSE but that he CAN CREATE and RECREATE himself

  • Abandoned to be Free: Freedom comes with responsibility and the challenge of navigating life's meaning.

    • i am still the one who get to make my own path; i am abandoned in a way that i get to decide alone in the end. ( even tho i seek help from my peers, in the end, it’s still all me )

  • freedom in Despair: we’re in despair in a way that we do not always get the life that we want

    • •Reality is not always compatible with what we want, that is why we exercise freedom in DESPAIR.

  • Life in action: our actions define who and what we are

Session 3: Freedom & Responsibility

  • Freedom implies responsibility

    • how we present ourselves to others is our responsibility

      • e.g. a person born in a poor family - look for job to support the family/ try hard, ganon ? lol

      • we have the capacity to change our condition into something more because we are free and capable

  • IN SHORT: To be human is to be free and to be free is to be RESPONSIBLE, not only for oneself, but also for others and the humanity as a whole

  • Moral Freedom According to Kant:

    • freedom aint an act of doing what you want becuase this is simply being a slave to your desires or emotions.

    • Moral Law: Universal set of conduct that governs all human being ( prang natural law )

    • 2 obligations of a human person

      • to obey the dictates of his reason / to obey the decrees of moral law

    • Hypothetical Imperative: Conditional actions. ( you do this because of a certain reward or punishment )

    • Categorical Imperative: Actions done for their own right. ( the doer does not mind about whatever reward or punishment await them )

    • Universal Maxim: Consider if an action could be universalized.

•It means do not do an act because it makes us or other people happy but because we want it to be a universal law. •A Human person ought to perform acts that can be universalized and not those that simply promote their interests.

  • Concrete Responsibility:

    • Two Senses of Responsibility: Guilt for actions and to do moral/legal =task

    • Consequences of Actions: Every action has potential impacts on self and others.

    • Examples: Loss of scholarships due to choices.

  • Remember:

We can do what ever we want, but be ready to face the consequence of our actions.

•There are people who maybe affected by your actions.

    Examples:

    •Cyber Bullying

•Buying Products in the Market (Apple or Mango)

    •Food Choices (Beef)
