Homogeneous Mixtures and Solutions

  • Definition:

    • Components are evenly distributed throughout the entirety of the mixture.
  • Comparison between homogeneous mixtures and pure substances:
    • Homogeneous mixtures are frequently confused with pure substances because both display a uniform appearance.
    • Primary distinction:
    • The composition of a pure substance is strictly constant regardless of its origin or method of preparation.
    • Pure substance example: Sodium chloride (NaCl\text{NaCl}) is always composed of sodium and chlorine in an exact mass ratio of 2323 to 35.535.5.
    • Homogeneous mixture flexibility: A homogeneous mixture of NaCl\text{NaCl} and water can be prepared using variable proportions.
      • Example ratio 1: 5g5\,\text{g} of NaCl\text{NaCl} combined with 100g100\,\text{g} of water.
      • Example ratio 2: 10g10\,\text{g} of NaCl\text{NaCl} combined with 100g100\,\text{g} of water.
