Homogeneous Mixtures and Solutions
- Definition:
- A homogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition is completely uniform throughout the entire mixture.
- Key structural characteristics:
- Contains no visible boundaries between components.
- Components are evenly distributed throughout the entirety of the mixture.
- Comparison between homogeneous mixtures and pure substances:
- Homogeneous mixtures are frequently confused with pure substances because both display a uniform appearance.
- Primary distinction:
- The composition of a pure substance is strictly constant regardless of its origin or method of preparation.
- Pure substance example: Sodium chloride (NaCl) is always composed of sodium and chlorine in an exact mass ratio of 23 to 35.5.
- Homogeneous mixture flexibility: A homogeneous mixture of NaCl and water can be prepared using variable proportions.
- Example ratio 1: 5g of NaCl combined with 100g of water.
- Example ratio 2: 10g of NaCl combined with 100g of water.
- Both combinations yield a homogeneous mixture of NaCl and water, which is termed a solution.
- Stirring and dissolution example:
- When a spoonful of sugar dissolves in water, sufficient stirring ensures that the composition of the mixture becomes identical throughout the solution, forming a homogeneous mixture.
Heterogeneous Mixtures
- Definition:
- A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture consisting of physically distinct parts, where each distinct part possesses different properties.
- Key structural characteristics:
- Contains at least two visible phases.
- Representative examples:
- Mixture of oil and water
- Mixture of wood ash and water
- Mixture of sand and water
